SOM : content based image retrieval

Ever searched for images based on who or what is in it without help of tags or filenames. it is possible but just as much possible as voice recognition was few years ago. This technology is called Content Based Image Retrieval or CBIR for short.long time ago when my interest in anything related to AI was really big i frequented a number of sites i bumped on a very intersting article Self Organizing Map AI for Pictures By Casey Chesnut .it was reallly good when u consider the accuracy he got with it.He used a type of neural networks called Self Organising Maps (SOM) or Kohonen Map named after the creator of this algorithm.

but since he prefered not to release the source or the program i searched online to find a lot of online sites that perform this kind of search but only online nothing that i can download and use on my large collection of pictures.

Why am i talking about this now ? :) just to say that i have started to work on this and i hope to make a good program and on the way learn a lot of stuff like neural networks and its variants. And i hope to make this my first step into the massive world of AI related technologies . if u are impatient and want to try this now u can try imgseek , a python based program that i tried some time ago. it is good but did not have the accuracy i was expecting and it had some stability problems. but a good software none the less.

siging out for now

Freedom

when did India get its freedom ?

  • 1950
  • 1948
  • 1949
  • ?????
  • please don’t record this

Shocked or puzzled ? these were just some of the answers people gave to the question on Vijay TV. This truly came as a surprise to me that people who were more than 20 yrs old (aka supposed to be mature people and most seem to be educated) answered like this.

I am not angry or sad for these people both of which is useless to solve the problem. I am just happy that atleast Vijay TV did a good program on the martyrs and freedom fighters of India.

On another note, quite unintentionally my post on declaration of independence is followed by a post on Freedom. :) lets see how this goes. i must post regularly . how “reglularly” ? and how useful they are to others are the most important things. which is the point of having this blog ;)

A Dream

Declaration

Finally i have started something that i must have done a long time ago . I have always felt something passionate or unexplainable feelings towards dream and achieving it. I’ll talk about my dream and pour out what ever i think about the subject as time pass by . but today is the first part and what dream ever starts without a clear inspiration . this blog is a pointer to some real good work that tinkles the feelings deep within everyone and helps us achieve it .My first inspiration was from ” The Alchemist ” by Paulo Coelho and my favoutire quote goes like

” when some one dreams of achieving something the whole world conspires to help them “

a must read and an enjoyable one too about a boy searching the world following his dream.

now that is a story but a person in real life has done something like this and is truely inspirational to all of us . he is Matt Harding , who traveled all around the world on his personal savings and is now famous all aver the internet. just check out this video he made that brought him to center of attention .

and lastly another one of those flash animations that use nothing more than still images and beautiful words to kindle the explorer within you and remind u that u are free and independent.

i sign off today with my declaration of independence and will follow up on this topic regulary .

Photosynth : must checkout

there are certain things that will appear out of no where and take u by storm. that was how i felt when i checked out Photosynth. clearly some tough work done there by the team and a beta/demo will be made availabe sometime later this year or next year. ( the architect in c9 video said it would be available by fall , now i m not in US and i dont know when this “fall” comes in their calendar )
there is also a video on channel9 , about this explained by one of the architects of Photosynth so check it out too . some of the new terms i learnt in watching this video are multiresulution images and how this is simpler than a high resolution tiff image
this reminded me of another research video i saw a long time back in channel9 . about a research project called mylifebits, where an entire suite of apps allowed the indexing and relating all the work done by a person on a pc. i hope even this cool suite would be made available as some beta or demo.

while searching for some info when i got really intersted in these kind of researches i found a site that will be realllly useful http://researchchannel.org ,they have an entire library of videos on all topics. any time spent in this site is certainly not wasted.

so found a lot of links and new topics to learn about. do check them out . all of these are research related topics and who knows may be u can get a spark when u see any of them for the next big revolution.
